Wallets can take a while to download and sync the blockchain. This process can be speed up by using the bootstrap.dat and the peers.dat file in the GOSSIP data directory.

What is bootstrap.dat and what does it do?

To speed up the process of syncing with the blockchain, a file called bootstrap.dat can be used instead of having your wallet download the blockchain block by block. The bootstrap.dat file contains the latest blockchain information needed to have your wallet synced and up-to-date. The peers.dat file includes actual masternode peers. With this file, You not need to use addnode= in your config. The file is in the databse format (.dat) and can't be open and edited. When you doing this, you will destroy the file.

What is peers.dat and what does it do?

The peers.dat file contains active masternode servers (peers). The file is in the databse format (.dat) and can't be open and edited. When you doing this, you will destroy the file.

Remember: Always backup your wallet.dat

Windows wallet

When you have no GOSSIP wallet on your computer (fresh installation)

  1. Download the actual wallet here

  2. Download the bootstrap.dat and the peers.dat here

  3. Extract all archives in a folder which you want to run your wallet.
  4. Start your wallet (gossipcoin-qt.exe)

  5. Copy the path from the Explorer and paste it and klick OK

  6. When the Windows Firewall ask you, allow both options and allow access.

  7. Now your wallet is in sync. Don't disturb this process and wait until it's finished. Import blocks from disk means, that your wallet is syncing from the bootstrap.dat file and not with other nodes.

After it finishes the syncing process, the bootstrap.dat file will be automatically renamed to bootstrap.dat.old. You can safely delete the file if you wish.

Every time you copy a new bootstrap.dat file to the GOSSIP folder, the wallet will update the blocks accordingly. If there is nothing to update, it will be ignored. It will, again, rename itself to the .dat.old name and overwrite any previous files.

Note: If your wallet stays hidden during the process, or appears to have frozen, there are ways to check the import progress.

  • Check the debug.log file. You musn't open the debug.log, you will see thatthe file size is increasing

  2. The GOSSIP wallet must be closed, extract the both files and copy or move the bootstrap.dat and the peers.dat  to your GOSSIP wallet folder

  3. Start your wallet. It should start indexing/updating the blocks shortly after, saving you hours of waiting

(OPTIONAL) Even though there is no need, you can delete all files and folders, except the wallet.dat and masternode.conf file, for a clean update/installation. Make a backup copy of all before!
